Barriers to Communication

Barriers To Communication task 3 (a)

General Communication
Engage the Audience

It is important to engage your audience, this is important as you need to keep your audience interested/entertained otherwise they will get bored and sleepy. For example if you are giving a presentation and you just tell them what you have to say and leave it at that, the audience could get bored. The idea is to keep them entertained and interested in what you are talking about.
One important factor to take into consideration, is when engaging your audience use humour, if your sense of humour is different to that of your audience then you could look very silly if you crack a joke and they dont find it funny and just laugh at you. Worst case scenario, they may find it offensive, and that would be bad. You could use programs such as powerpoint to help aid you with the presenation. Pictures, video and sound also make the . Dont over do images or videos, or the novelty will soon go away and the presentation will soon look cluttered.
It is important as to keep your audience on the ball of what your saying.
A presentation is a great example for this as your presenting to a maybe a small or large group of people, and if your talk about boring stuff long and too detailed things, your audience will lose interest. the key thing to do is to make short snappy and detailed bullet points and expand.

Interpersonal Communication

Adapting to suit an audience

First of all there are a lot of culture types in the modern day so you must make sure you know there beliefs if it be with religion or rules they have. Be mindful of the situation your in, you don't want to end up offending any one. For example Muslims, they have strict rules and beliefs including certain clothing they wear to food they eat. Also it will be vital to speak clearly and get your point full across as some people might not understand the English language. If they don't understand you fully then its more than likely there will be something wrong. Your teaching style might have to change with the different cultures you meet, a lot of people come from all kinds of backgrounds so be caring and supportive because it will take time to learn.
Now moving onto the different types of audience you may come up against, it could be from school children to university students or friends and family as well as people you may work with. Be careful and prepared that you use the right language for the correct audience. You don't want to be swearing or using long and difficult terms when you with school kids because they simply won't understand. Where as with your co-workers you can making sure you keep professional but use bigger more smarter words because you don't want to insult there intelligences. Always be prepared for different audiences and prepared to adapt to the types of situation your in.

Written Communication Skills
Proofreading
Proofreading is a big part in written communication almost everyone makes mistakes when writing things especially something important such as an application form or a CV. The last thing that you want in one of these written documents is mistakes such as spelling and the writing not making sense. So the way you can check this is read over your work or get someone to read over it for you. reading out loud can make the mistakes very obvious. Most of the mistakes that people make a long document with no stopping just a continious sentence the best way is to make sure you have plenty of puntuation to make sense out of your document, paragraphs need to be remebered as they will make your work easier to read. Before handing a document to your tutor or to an employer proof read it to make sure that its makes sense and be sure to have someone read over it just to be sure that it makes sense.
